"Meet the Artist: Paul Rhymer" On July 31st, 2010 from 10 to 6, Paul D. Rhymer will be in the gallery, conducting a live sculpting session. Paul comes from a family of artists and has drawn and painted his whole life. After receiving an Associate of Arts degree in 1984, he accepted a job at the Smithsonian Institution doing taxidermy and model making and retired in 2010. As a result of so much three-dimensional work in his museum job, his own personal artwork gradually began to transform from painting and drawing into sculpture. Being an avid birder, waterfowl hunter, and taxidermist gives him constant anatomy and behavioral learning experiences that inspire his sculpture. Paul’s work has been exhibited in such prestigious art shows such as the National Sculpture Society, the Society of Animal Artists and Birds in Art. His wildlife sculpture is at the National Zoo, National Museum of Natural History, the Denver Zoo, Woodson Art Museum, Hiraim Blauvelt Museum and various public buildings and parks and private collections thought the US. Please join us a at Lovetts Gallery on Saturday, July 31st from 10-6, to meet this talented artist. |

LOUISA MCELWAIN | oil of joy 06 August 5 – 8 pm | opening reception friday evening through August 30 A classically trained artist with roots firmly planted in the New York School of Abstract Expressionism, McElwain paints with knives and masonry trowels, working quickly to capture an image before the light fades or the clouds drift past. Inspired by the color theory of Joseph Albers and a masters workshop with Wolf Kahn, it was at the Nera Simi drawing studio in Florence, Italy, in 1973 where McElwain says she learned to see by focusing on the same figure drawing for two weeks. For McElwain, paint is not subordinate to the motif. She often incorporates bits of stone, glass, plants, and even insects into the paint as she works. "There is a powerful feeling that surges up from the earth and through me as I paint," she says. "I am vulnerable to the powerful forces of wind and light and bugs. There is a rhythm to nature, a measured meter and tempo, the speed the clouds move in the sky, and the way the shadows shift. I'm walking a line, balancing between allowing the painting to exist for its own sake and expressing something true about my experience of nature.” Louisa McElwain | private view on thursday 05 august | by invitation only |

Contemporary Works Gallery C is proud to present Contemporary Works, an exhibit of new artworks by nationally renowned cityscape artist, Josh George. The exhibition will be in Gallery C on Wade Avenue, in Ridgewood Shopping Center, from August 6th through September 22nd. Josh George's cityscapes are influenced by works dating back to the 19th century impressionists. He is influenced by masters such as Edgar Degas and Mary Cassat because of their excellent drawing abilities. He is motivated and inspired by Richard Diabankorn and Wayne Thiebaud because, like George, they took the liberty of redesigning their landscapes to fit their own views. Josh George's work focuses on the changing cityscape from the street level view, like an Ash Can artist. George uses an plethora of materials when creating his works; not limiting himself, but including wallpaper scraps, postage stamps, and old product labels. Josh George has degrees from the Kansas City Art Institute and Central Missouri State University. He is a native of Kansas City, Missouri. |

Robert LaDuke Paintings of the 1930’s-40s Robert LaDuke’s narrative paintings are a combination of memories, dreams and everyday life. Some of LaDuke’s most vivid memories are of traveling cross country in the family Cadillac with an Airstream trailing behind. Combined with these memories is a fascination with 1940's era transportation and, because of an inheritance of antique steel toys, it comes as no surprise that the same steel toys often appear as subject matter in many of LaDuke’s paintings. Based on American transportation in the 1930-40s, LaDuke’s acrylic paintings feature images that were popular during that era. According to LaDuke, his work “is pretty much transportation oriented; trains, ships, cars, trailers, everything that rolls or floats - and they always have that nostalgic 40s look to them.” |

Origins: Rugs in Inspirational Places An exhibit of handwoven wool tapestry rugs by Regina Vorgang with photographs of each rug in the environment that inspired the design. “Origins” shows the spark of Regina’s inspiration and Scott’s vision — colors, sights, and sounds — that contribute to the designs in Regina’s rugs. The exhibition provides rare insight into the creative process. Exhibiting the rugs and photographs side by side, the viewer can see the scene and the abstracted interpretation of that scene in the weavings. This project is a collaboration between husband and wife who share creative expression in different media. Regina enjoys using natural materials such as wool and linen that are renewable, warm, inviting, and lustrous. The connection between the natural materials used in the weavings and the natural environment led Regina and Scott to photograph her rugs in their inspirational spaces. This strengthens the connection between the rugs, the materials with which they are woven, and the sights the couple has seen in their travels and everyday life. |

Ascend Descend by Tom Lieber Descend Ascend, an exhibition of new paintings by Tom Lieber will open at Dolby Chadwick Gallery on Thursday, September 2, 2010. Working in the evolving tradition of abstract painting that began in the early 20th century, Lieber’s grand gestural sweeps, tight scrawlings, and delicate, calligraphic strokes utilize the rich, open language of paint to translate often enigmatic states of inner being. References to cresting waves and the lush landscape of Kauai—Lieber’s adopted home—underscore the dual importance of the natural world as a source of inspiration. “We seem to be at a place of Descending after years of abusing the planet,” Lieber explains, referring to the title of his show. The act of Ascent and its promise of progress, however, is a metaphor for his faith that such destruction will slowly be mended over time. Christopher Knight, critic for the Los Angeles Times, alludes to this environmental subtext, citing how Lieber’s application of paint is stylistically “atmospheric, like fog banks of shifting color slipping over a landscape.” In the past, Lieber has typically layered these assorted notations against two fields of color that meet to create a horizon approximately halfway down the composition. This horizon, however, has mysteriously dematerialized in many of his newest works. In Black and White Shift and Fin, for instance, it is as if Lieber has magnified smaller sections of earlier paintings, transforming modest marks into churning, storm-like masses often coded in black. While this new direction is indicative of artistic maturation, his abstract compositions continue to depict the layered complexities and rich color schemes he has become known for. Tom Lieber was born in Saint Louis, Missouri in 1949 and graduated from the University of Illinois with both a B.F.A (1971) and M.F.A. (1974). He received a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts in 1975 and, over the course of his career, his work has been acquired by the Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the Tate Collection, London. This will be Leiber’s first solo show at Dolby Chadwick Gallery. |

LYNN BOGGESS | solo show 15 October 5 – 8 pm | opening reception friday evening through October 30 The landscapes of Lynn Boggess give us a year-round walk in the woods. They provide us with a series of meditations on beauty; they give us an opportunity to consider the importance of Nature to our own experience. They also contain, in small subtle ways, much of the history of landscape painting. Because Boggess has chosen to paint Nature directly, and because he sees it as beautiful and endangered, he draws us into his fierce political vision.Because that vision is so disciplined that the artist presents it for us, without commentary, we may choose for ourselves which memory to recall; which path to take. Cary Ennis - Recent Works Cary Ennis incorporates meditation and stillness into her life as well as her paintings, creating peaceful images that invite contemplation. Maria and Hopi jars and pots line the shelves of her studio beneath photos of her spiritual leaders, and these are the seen and unseen elements that make up her compositions. Meditation extends to all aspects of the painter's life and she begins each day in her studio with a moment of introspection. |

Ansel Adams and Intimate, Small Scale Prints from the 1920s-1950s ANSEL ADAMS Intimate, Small Scale Prints from the 1920s—1950s Park City, Utah—Ansel Adams--photographer, musician, naturalist, explorer, critic and teacher – was a giant in the field of landscape photography. His work can be viewed as the end of an arc of American art concerned with capturing the “sublime” in the unspoiled Western landscape. This tradition included the painters Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Cole and Thomas Moran, and the photographers Carleton Watkins, Timothy O’Sullivan and William Henry Jackson. For much of his early adulthood, Adams was torn between a career as a concert pianist versus one in photography; later, he famously likened his photographic negative to a musical score, and the print to the performance. Yet most museum goers are only familiar with the heroic, high-gloss, high-contrast prints that Adams manufactured to order in the 1970s-80s, coinciding with the emergence of the first retail galleries devoted to photography. As performance, these later prints were akin to “brass bands.” Much less familiar are the intimate prints--rich in the middles tones – the “chamber music” that Adams crafted earlier in is career. The present show focuses on the masterful small-scale prints made by Adams from the 1920’s into the 1950s. During this time period, there is quite an evolution of printing styles: from the soft-focus, warm-toned, painterly “Parmelian prints” of the 1920s; through the f/64 school of sharp-focused photography that he co-founded with Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham in the 1930s; and, after the War, towards a cooler, higher-contrast printmaking approach. The Kimball Art Center is pleased to present this collection of 51 Ansel Adams photographs in our Main Gallery from November 6, 2010 – January 9, 2011. |
